Arresting sex workers 'serves no purpose' says Wiltshire police commissioner - 17th December 2019

Speaking on the international day to end violence against sex workers, Angus Macpherson said women involved in the trade were among society's most vulnerable. Fine them and they have to go on the street to pay the fine off. Instead the police are after the clients, making it harder for sex workers to make ends meet. Of course, Angus Macpherson has no compunction on closing down brothels, which endangers sex workers. Working together helps with safety. A Chinese massage parlour on Commercial Road closed by order of the magistrates in November. So Angus Macpherson you really really don't have the safety of sex workers in your agenda.

A man, John Ritchie drove around the streets of Swindon hunting for women who were intoxicated. Police spotted Ritchie with an escort at around 2 am in the morning and went to investigate. In the car was Ritchie with a near-comatose woman with her jeans and knickers pulled down. Both persons were not keen to give their names and addresses, and the woman did not want action taken. A few days later she went to the police to file a complaint.  Police examined traffic cameras found that Ritchie had been driving all around the city. He admitted assault and taking pictures. This was an extremely worrying case where Ritchie had targeted vulnerable women, in this case, a Swindon escort, and sexually assaulted them. Ritchie was jailed for two years and four months.

Swindon Sex Work News

Three human traffickers have been sentenced to jail for their involvement in a sex trafficking ring that exploited women from Eastern Europe in brothels across South West England, including Swindon.

The group, led by 52-year-old Maciej Kozlowski, formerly of Midland Road in Gloucester, was found guilty of trafficking women and also convicted of raping one of the victims. Piotr Lebek, 57, formerly of Faulkner Street in Gloucester, assisted Kozlowski in trafficking operations, while Agata Jankowska, 37, from Stroud Road in Gloucester, and Lidia Grzybowska, 45, from Musselburgh in Scotland, played roles in booking flights, managing phones for appointments, and controlling victims' actions.

The investigation, conducted by the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit in collaboration with Gloucestershire Constabulary and Wiltshire Police, revealed that the group trafficked at least 20 women over two years, predominantly from Poland, to work in brothels across various locations.

In sentencing at Bristol Crown Court, Kozlowski received a 14-year prison term, Lebek was sentenced to seven years and six months, and Jankowska received three years and four months. All three will be placed on the Sexual Offenders Register for five years.

Grzybowska's sentencing is pending.

The convictions were secured with evidence including records of movements, thousands of messages arranging appointments, photos for online adverts, and reports of cash collected from victims.

Detective Superintendent Charlotte Tucker, who led the investigation, condemned the exploitation of vulnerable victims and emphasized the importance of recognizing and reporting signs of trafficking.

Detective Inspector Rory Ainslie from Gloucestershire Constabulary's Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit commended the victims for their courage and cooperation, highlighting the collaborative effort across agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Three individuals—a trio consisting of two men and one woman—associated with a Romanian crime syndicate were convicted for trafficking women into the UK and establishing a brothel in Swindon. Following a ten-week trial at Winchester Crown Court, Gigi Ciobanica, 46, residing in Birmingham's Grasmere Road, was found guilty of conspiracy to engage in human trafficking and money laundering. Priyantha Yakdehige, 54, from Purton's Vasterne Close, was convicted of human trafficking conspiracy and admitted guilt for money laundering. Cristina Olaru, 31, residing in Swindon's Commercial Road, was convicted of controlling prostitution for profit and money laundering.

The investigation into these heinous crimes had been ongoing since 2015. The gang trafficked young women from Romania to the UK, exploiting them in Swindon-based brothels. The victims were coerced into work at locations owned by Yakdehige, while Ciobanica and Olaru rented and controlled these properties, overseeing the workers and reaping a share of their earnings.

DS Richard Nelsen, part of the Serious and Organised Crime Unit, highlighted Yakdehige's pivotal role in orchestrating the criminal enterprise. He arranged flights, accommodations, and facilitated the gang's operations. Ciobanica, identified as the gang's ringleader, managed the exploited females, ensuring profits through their transportation, housing, and activities, redirecting the earnings to build properties in Romania while evading taxes and exploiting others.

Olaru, Ciobanica's partner at the time, managed the sex workers' listings and their assigned addresses. DS Nelsen stressed the importance of community involvement in reporting such criminal activities, emphasizing that dismantling such operations requires collective efforts beyond law enforcement. The impending sentencing serves as a stern warning to those involved in similar nefarious activities.

The detective said she was committed to ensuring offenders are brought to justice.

My comments on this is it is such a shame that sex workers are not given the opportunity to work safely, and have time to vet their customers, and to take their customers to a safe location.  It is also terrible this government has reduced benefits, so that women have no recourse but to sell sex.
