Normanton Sex Work News

In a noteworthy and commendable initiative, officers from Normanton's Safer Neighbourhood Team have undertaken voluntary efforts to facilitate the rehabilitation of street sex workers, addressing the multifaceted challenges they face in their lives.

The establishment of this safeguarding team was prompted by shifts in national guidance and the comprehensive understanding acquired by the officers through their interactions with sex workers. They recognized that a paramount imperative lay in providing essential support and, thereby, breaking the pernicious cycle of sex work.

Officers affiliated with this dedicated team extend not only advice and practical assistance but also act as conduits for connecting sex workers with partner organizations proficient in addressing various issues. These encompass, among others, addiction to alcohol and drugs, housing instability, and health-related concerns.

PC Steve Revill, a member of Normanton's Safer Neighbourhood Team, articulated, "The sex workers on the streets of Normanton frequently engage in their activities as a means to cope with underlying problems in their lives. These issues can often revolve around dependencies on substances such as alcohol or drugs, with sex work being a means to sustain these habits."

Revill further elucidated the team's commitment, asserting, "We have chosen to intervene and assist in breaking this cycle by imparting guidance and directing them to our community partners who can facilitate their transition away from the streets and towards a better life. Our objective is to provide support rather than criminalize these women."

In addition to aiding sex workers, who are vulnerable to exploitation by individuals often referred to as 'pimps,' the safeguarding team endeavors to curtail the incidence of crimes committed either by the sex workers themselves or those connected with them.

"We recognize that these women on the streets can also become victims of various other forms of crime. Our dedicated safeguarding team, comprised of officers who have volunteered their personal time outside their regular duties, identifies these women and extends as much assistance as possible to extricate them from their current circumstances," Revill explained.

While prioritizing the welfare of women engaged in street-based sex work, the team is also taking measures to identify and address the men who seek their services.

PC Revill emphatically stated, "It is essential to clarify that, even as we extend our helping hand to the women on the streets of Normanton, men who visit this area to engage in paid sexual services will be subject to legal consequences. This may encompass arrests and court proceedings. We adopt a zero-tolerance stance toward individuals who enter our community for this purpose. They exploit the vulnerable, and our response is rigorous. The police maintain a comprehensive database of such individuals, and repeat offenders face the risk of public exposure and shame. We remain steadfast in our commitment to combating this activity to ensure the safety of our streets.

“A key aspect of Operation Scarlet is passing the details of sex workers to our partners at Woman’s Work, Restore and Phoenix Futures in the hope that they can get some support to help them move on working on the streets in this way.”

If the women are caught soliciting, they can be handed a caution, and if they are caught again within three months they can be arrested.
