Bournemouth Sex Work News

Two women were rescued following the discovery of a brothel in Bournemouth town center. Authorities responded to reports of suspicious activity in the Richmond Hill area on Tuesday, April 16th. Subsequently, a brothel was identified, leading to the arrest of a 59-year-old man on suspicion of human trafficking offenses. He has been released on bail pending further investigation.

A spokesperson for Bournemouth police expressed pride in the successful safeguarding of the two females, emphasizing the unwavering commitment to community safety.

This incident follows a similar discovery in February when another brothel was uncovered in the town center. In that case, a woman was arrested, and two individuals were safeguarded. The arrested individual, a 48-year-old woman from London, was suspected of running the brothel.

Human trafficking, as highlighted by the CPS, is often intertwined with organized crime in the sex industry, encompassing activities such as immigration offenses, violence, drug trafficking, and money laundering. Victims of trafficking are frequently targeted due to vulnerabilities stemming from their immigration status or economic circumstances.

It's essential to note that running a brothel for prostitution purposes can carry a penalty of up to seven years in prison.

I do wonder whether these two women wanted to be safe guarded.  This 'safeguarding' is always mentined when women are found working in a brothel.  Many appear not to want to be safeguarded, as they are working.  Who knows?

Bournemouth Pier will be lit up and marchers will wear red and carry red umbrellas as they mark International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers.

The day was established to raise awareness of hate crimes committed against sex workers all over the world.  The red umbrella is the global symbol of sex worker rights, including their right to protection from violence.

On Friday 16 December from 5.30pm the Pier will provide a spectacular backdrop with red lighting promoting the cause. The attendees will then walk to St Paul’s Hostel Upton where they will be given the opportunity to view two pre-recorded videos of females talking about their experiences of working on the street, brothels, addiction issues and the violence they suffered.  They will also hear from Dorset Police as to how the force are dealing with crimes committed against people involved in prostitution.

VULNERABLE young people, sex workers and others at risk of harm on the streets of Bournemouth can now get help from an unusual place. The service came out of Dorset HealthCare’s annual Dragons’ Den staff innovation competition. One woman supported by the DWWP, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “The team means so much to me – they make my life on the streets more bearable. I appreciate their advice and having a shoulder to cry on.”
