Newham Council has approved a 10-year Sex Work Strategy (2025-2035) and a one-year action plan, prioritizing the protection of vulnerable sex workers and supporting the wider community. This strategy aligns with the Council's 'Building a Fairer Newham' plan, aiming to reduce the stigma and exploitation of sex workers while addressing anti-social behavior.

Key outcomes include reduced crime and anti-social behavior, improved safety perceptions, and increased sex worker engagement with services. Existing efforts have already led to a decline in anti-social behavior reports and improved service access for sex workers.

Councillor Neil Wilson emphasized the significance of this strategy, highlighting the "One Council" approach involving various departments and partnerships with community organizations. The strategy was co-produced with sex workers, residents, and those with lived experience, ensuring their voices are central.

The strategy recognizes the impact of sex work on residents, including concerns about safety, noise disturbances, and litter. It also addresses the needs of sex workers, acknowledging the link between sex work and issues like modern slavery and trafficking. The Council aims to improve safety and well-being for both residents and sex workers through a multi-faceted approach, including partnerships with law enforcement to combat exploitation.

This comprehensive strategy demonstrates Newham's commitment to addressing the complex issue of sex work in a way that prioritizes both community safety and the well-being of those involved in the sex industry.
