Colchester Sex Work News

A residential complex in Rowan Place, Colchester, has been targeted in a graffiti attack, with red paint and the word "brothel" scrawled across the building and ground. An entrance on the opposite side, in Clarendon Way, was also defaced.

A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed concern about the decline of the estate, noting a rise in Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) and drug-related issues since they moved in a year ago. They highlighted their shock at such an incident occurring in Colchester, especially after reading about similar "red paint attacks" elsewhere in England.

Castle ward Councillor Amy Kirkby-Taylor condemned the vandalism as "disgusting" and "thoroughly antisocial behaviour," urging anyone with information to contact authorities. She also suggested that the perpetrator might be in need of mental health support.

This incident follows a similar act of vandalism at the Railway Sleeper Lodge in Bergholt Road, which was also defaced with red and black paint. Police forces across the UK are investigating these "red paint attacks," with The Telegraph reporting that red paint is "a known mark of Chinese gangs."

Essex Police and the East Block Group, managing the Rowan Place complex, have been contacted for comment.
